The importance of pallet coding for the logistics sector

UBS, specialist in labeling, coding and marking, proposes customized and quality labeling to ensure that the product reaches its destination.

In any business, product labeling is vital, and logistics and distribution are no exception. Pallet labeling is the last traceability step before the product goes into the supply chain, so a reliable coding process is essential to allow a precise identification for each pallet. Only this way you can be sure to have a correct distribution, logistics and guarantee the product’s arrival to its destination. In addition, this solution helps the control of inventories in the finished product warehouses and distribution centers.

Pallet coding requires suitable solutions adapted to the most demanding cadences in the production chain. And, in this sense, United Barcode Systems (UBS), a company with 25 years of experience and its own printing and labeling technology, offers the most efficient solution for every need thanks to its own Print & Apply equipment: APL 38sAPL 8000 Series and APL 8000 ELV Series.

The Spanish Association of Commercial Codification (AECOC) advises to face the technological challenges that traceability entails without losing sight of the main objective, which is none other than that the products arrive with full guarantee to consumers, thanks to traceability. A need that has become evident in recent years with globalization. And even more so in recent months, especially in sectors, such as pharmaceuticals or food, that have seen their logistics and distribution activity increased in an emergency situation as a result of Covid-19.

To guarantee the traceability of the products recommended by AECOC, UBS has equipment based on Print & Apply technology for labeling pallets that, in addition to responding to speeding needs in each case, meet the highest quality requirements. And, above all, they stand out for the adaptability of their physical configuration to any production line and their ability to integrate with the client's ERP. Two characteristics that make the difference in a more competitive market context.

Pallet labeling technology

UBS systems offer all labeling possibilities: on one, two or three sides, whether it is Euro pallets, universal pallets, half pallets, stacked pallets or variable heights. They are controlled by PLC, are compatible with all OEM print engines on the market and comply with GS1 standards for the printing and application of pallet labels with GS1-128 barcodes, and with application identifier (AI).

UBS Print & Apply equipment are easily integrated thanks to the UBS LabMan 4.0 software, compatible with any ERP, MES, WMS or DBMS system. Using this software, which makes it possible to identify the pallets coming from different lines, the UBS equipment manage the print queues and integrate and centralize the data with the client's ERP to create and generate the labels for each logistics unit with all the information necessary for its correct storage, transport and traceability.

In addition, UBS printing and labeling systems are prepared for different types of applications, depending on the customer's requirements. The applicator arms or tamp pads can be equipped with a roller, a sponge or a corner applicator, while the placement of the labels is carried out by direct application or tamp, blow, or a combination of both technologies (tamp blow).

Each sector and each company has its needs and its peculiarities. For this reason, UBS has a trio of aces, three equipment based on the same printing and labeling system, but which allow a more tailored solutions for each case.

APL 38s is the most manageable pallet labeling equipment from UBS. It is compact and small in size, so it can be easily integrated into end-of-lines, in medium and high-volume industrial environments. Place one or two labels per pallet at a speed of 180 pallets per hour with double label application.

APL 8000 Series automatically and accurately prints and places labels on up to three sides of the palletIts height-adjustable telescopic support and a Smart Tamp Pad, with label presence sensor and applied label detector, is compatible with uneven surfaces.

APL 8000 ELV Series is a unique machine on the market, with an electronically controlled gear motor and Smart Tamp Pad, for intelligent label placement. It is UBS's solution for the automatic labeling of stacked pallets or pallets with variable heights, since its lifting system allows working at high speed (up to 138 stacked pallets per hour with application on two sides of each pallet) and precisely with variable data and in real time, from a height of 800 mm to 2,400 mm.
